7 Habits of a God Chaser
What does it mean to seek the Holy Spirit? What about doing it with your whole heart? Sometimes we can get caught up with the ambiguity of what it means to seek God and we get stuck in a perpetual state of spiritual sloth. Healthy habits or spiritual disciplines will help you to get out of sloth mode and get into the lane of a God chaser. Here are 7 habits Of A God Chaser to throw some gasoline on the fire of your pursuit:
1) WORSHIPPING THE KING.
Sitting at the number 1 spot is worship and rightfully so (the rest really aren’t in any particular order). Worship is not just a habit of seeking God, it is a lifestyle. Oral Roberts was once quoted saying, “If you only have 10 minutes to pray, 8 of it should be worship”. That is a pretty good rule of thumb, 80% of your pursuit of God is in the acknowledgement of His supremacy and His worth. You spend that time giving Him glory, in song, in word, and in effort. King David said that he would not give God an offering that didn’t cost him something. That means your worship is costly. Its your time you could be running errands, the dishes or the laundry piling up, but instead, you take 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there throughout your day to just worship Him without any expectation or petition in mine, just simply because He is worthy.
2) JOURNAL YOUR HISTORY WITH GOD.
Imagine sitting at the desk of the smartest business mind in America, and that person giving you the keys to building a successful million dollar business. Ok, now image not taking any notes and leaving that meeting forgetting half of the keys you were told. Sounds absurd and slightly irresponsible, right? That’s what it’s like when God speaks to you, or you get an encouraging word from a prophet or friend and you don’t take the time to right it down. It could potentially be a key to unlock what God wants to lead you into in the future, but by not recording it down we are not stewarding it. Start to journal and get some history with God. Not just history in church, I’m talking history with God, alone, just you and Him, and when He speaks, write it down no matter how weird or silly it seems. You may not journal every day, but at least start to journal those important things God shows you in your life. You will be able to look back and learn from where you were and help others out of where they are just because you wrote about what God said and did for you.
3) PRAYER AND CONVERSATION WITH GOD.
Now, everyone expected prayer to be on this list, and rightly so. But prayer is not just reciting the 23rd Psalm or reading someone else’s prayer out of a devotional. Prayer is your conversation with God. Friends talk. If you had a friend and you never talked to said friend, you would not be friends with said friend. Communication is key in any relationship. Jesus did not just pay for an ability to follow principles. Principles are important, but Jesus paid for relationship with you and me! That means you tell Him when you are happy or sad or struggling or mad. Be real with God. You may be able to put on a show for social media that everything in life is amazing, but God can see through all of that and wants you to want His help and guidance, and most importantly His friendship. Friends talk about the desires of each other’s hearts, and that’s what prayer is for the seeker.
4) READING SCRIPTURE.
Reading scripture is not only important, it is absolutely necessary. The bible says in Romans 10:17 “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God”. It is not that you simply have an audio bible on repeat all day. That would be wonderful if it worked like that! Your faith comes by you hearing God’s voice, and the ability to hear or recognize God’s voice comes from reading the Word of God. Reading the scriptures daily, not just as a ritual or discipline, but reading the scriptures daily until He speaks to you. That will transform your walk and relationship with God and set you on fire for more of Him!
5) FIND YOUR TRIBE.
Who do you hang out with? Who do you run with? It might seem like your stereotypical youth group question, but you can’t disregard the importance of it. Who you surround yourself with will ultimately, whether directly or indirectly, influence you on some level. Hang around people who are where you want to be and are running hard after God. Finding your tribe(or local church, home group, prayer group, etc) will give you the support system you need to maintain and steward the fire in your heart for God. When you are in a valley season your tribe is who keeps you grounded and keeps you burning for God. Find your tribe to run with!
6) BAPTISM OF FIRE.
God is so good in His nature. He has given us His Spirit to guide us, to teach us, to comfort us, and among many other things, He has given us His Spirit to refresh us! It is perfectly legal to ask for a fresh baptism of the Holy Spirit. This is you giving God permission to pour out His Spirit in a new and fresh way on your life. We see this time and time again in the book of Acts, the Spirit would fall on the believers and they would be invigorated in their faith and boldness and many signs and wonders followed. A fresh baptism of God’s Spirit on your life is the very thing you need to invigorate your walk and your faith. Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened!”
7) FASTING.
This is not so popular to talk about among Christian’s in America today! I just have to say, I love fasting. Fasting is a way for you to die to the flesh again and again. By refusing your body of food(or entertainment, or any other form of stimulation), you are saying to your body that God is a higher priority. Fasting does nothing to change God. We cannot go on a hunger strike to get God to move in a situation, that is manipulation, which is the beginning of witchcraft (more to come on that!). Fasting only changes us. It helps us renew our minds and reorganize our priorities to eternal things that matter. Seasons of fasting, whether it be days, weeks or months are the very seasons a lot of Christians hear significant words or directions for their lives. They have simply quieted the flesh so they can hear the Spirit more clearly. If you have never fasted, start off with baby steps, like skipping a meal or two. When you would normally be eating, use that time to worship God and listen in to what He wants to say to you. It is also recommended to talk to those in your life whom you know have fasted before for best practices, tips and ideas. (Complete guide to fasting coming soon)
